1. Nikon Z50
So Nikon Z50 is small, but it has been deliberately designed so that it is still easy to hold and to use as a true enthusiast camera. There is a decent-sized grip, for instance, meaning that you can hold it firmly in your right hand without the feeling that you might drop it. And there is a high-quality 2.36 million electronic viewfinder – so you can use the camera at eye-level and see what you are shooting (and have shot) at eye-level in all lighting conditions. This is coupled with a 3-inch tilting LCD screen, that can be used to take low-angle shots, or even shots from above your head. Crucially for vloggers (and selfie lovers), the screen can be tilted to face forwards – so you can keep yourself in a shot as you record.
The stills side of the camera delivers 20-megapixel images – and can shoot these at up to 11 frames per second. There is no built-in stabilization – but as many of the lenses available have Vibration Reduction this is not a major issue. There is however electronic stabilization provided when shooting video, which can be recorded at an impressive 4K resolution without any cropping issues.
When comparing the prices for the Nikon Z50 you need to weigh up the relative merits of the different lens options available. You can find the camera available in ‘body only’ form – or with an FTZ mount adaptor so that you can use your Nikon SLR lenses with the Z-mount camera. However, the best-priced options are usually those with either one or two of the Nikon Z DX zooms specifically made for the Z50; although the most expensive option, the twin-lens kit is a particularly good deal if you want an all-in-one starter system. If you are into shooting videos, also consider the attractively priced Z50 vlogger kit.

2. Sony A7 III
So Sony a7 III is a 24MP full-frame mirrorless camera that incorporates many of the features and improvements found in the a7R III. Primary among these is a BSI sensor, along with the larger capacity ‘Z’ battery, AF joystick, and the company’s impressive EyeAF feature. Its 693-point AF system offers 93% frame coverage. Continuous shooting is offered at up to 10 fps with a mechanical shutter, and 5-axis in-body stabilization claims a 5.0 stop shutter speed advantage.
Video recorded at 4K/24p is taken from a 6K region of the sensor, while 30p shooting comes from a roughly 5K region with a 1.2x crop. The camera offers both S-Log2 and S-Log3 gamma curves for shooting wide dynamic range scenes or Hybrid Log Gamma for playing back directly on high dynamic range displays.
The new larger-capacity battery boasts 710 shots per charge. The a7 III uses the same 2.36m dot OLED viewfinder as its predecessor, giving a 1024 x 768-pixel view, rather than the higher-res version in the a7R III. The viewfinder is complemented by an articulated 3″ 921k-dot LCD.

3. Nikon D500
For enthusiast photographers, the D500 is the best camera deal, because they only spend a bit more than the entry-level models, and get the premium quality camera. Check out the latest Nikon D500 prices.
20.9 megapixels may not be as high as some other Nikon DSLRs, but the improved sensitivity performance here is more than worth the modest loss in pixel count. Despite not being weighed down with a top-end professional camera price tag, the Nikon D500 is an extremely capable sports camera too. The excellent autofocus provides sharp images of fast-moving subjects, even in less than ideal lighting conditions.

4. Canon 1D X Mark II
The EOS-1D X Mark II is Canon’s newest flagship DSLR aimed at pro-level photographers. A quick glance reveals the camera’s 1D-series heritage, but under the hood there are some exciting upgrades going on.
The 1D X II is built around a new 20.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor, now with Canon’s Dual Pixel autofocus system, includes an expanded 61-point autofocus system with 24% more coverage and a 360,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, and is one of the first Canon DSLRs (other than the somewhat niche 1D C) that captures 4K video. Predictably, it’s also built like a brick and performs like a Formula 1 race car.

5. Sony A6600
The Sony a6600 is the company’s top-of-the-line APS-C mirrorless camera, with 24MP of resolution and 4K video capture. It looks a lot like Sony’s other a6000-series models at first glance, but this one has the biggest battery and the best build quality of the bunch, even if the images it produces are broadly comparable to the less expensive options.
The a6600 further differentiates itself by offering in-body image stabilization, which is still a rarity among APS-C cameras. This should help with stills shooting in low light, to be sure, but also combines with excellent autofocus tracking to make it the best crop-sensor video shooter Sony currently sells.
