Design

Except for their physical size, the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus seem identical, but the S22 Ultra differs somewhat in design from its younger brother.

All three devices come with a centralized punch hole camera at the top of their displays, but while the S22 and S22+ have triple rear camera housings color-matched to the rear of the device, the S22 Ultra comes with a quad rear camera and the lenses sit within the rear of the device rather than within a housing.

The S22 Ultra also offers an S Pen built into its design, like the Galaxy Note series used to offer.

The S22 and S22+ come in white, pink, phantom green, and black color options. The S22 Ultra comes in black, green, burgundy, and white.

Waterproofing – IP68 to be precise – is on board all three models, but while the S22 Ultra opts for a glass rear, the S22 and S22+ have a plastic back as their predecessors did.

Display

All s22 series phones have Dynamic AMOLED displays, which means the screen on each model can refresh at up to 120Hz. The Galaxy S22 Ultra can automatically change its refresh rate down to 1Hz for static graphics and scale it up. The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus fall down to 10Hz, which is an improvement above the 48Hz minimum on non-Ultra S21 versions.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a large 6.8-inch QHD+ display, while the Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 have 6.6 and 6.1-inch displays, respectively. They have FHD+ resolution.

All three phones include Samsung’s VisionBooster technology, which intelligently adjusts brightness, contrast, and color calibration based on your surroundings. Samsung has yet to confirm if the Ultra and Plus feature the crazy 1,750 nits of brightness that rumors suggested.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ have a triple rear camera, made up of a 50-megapixel main sensor with f/1.8 aperture and OIS, plus a 12-megapixel ultra wide sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. The telephoto lens offers 3x optical zoom.

On the front of both the S22 and the S22+, there is a 10-megapixel snapper with f/2.2 aperture.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S22 Ultra features a quad rear camera setup, consisting of a 108-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture, and two 10MP telephoto lenses – one with an f/4.9 aperture and 10x zoom, the other with f/2.4 aperture and 3x zoom.

The front camera also steps it up a notch compared to the standard Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+, with a 40-megapixel lens offering an f/2.2 aperture.

Performance and battery life

All three Galaxy S22 variants this year use a new 4nm octa-core CPU. While Samsung avoided specifics in our meeting, this is most likely the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the United States and the Exynos 2200 in European countries. It’s unclear why Samsung had to be shady. There should be no difference in performance between the three phones, save for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which has a variant with 12GB of RAM (8GB on the base model).

The battery life of the Galaxy S21 series was hit-or-miss. The S21 Ultra performed admirably in our battery test, lasting almost 10 hours. In their adaptive refresh rate modes, the S21 and S21 Plus performed poorly, lasting 6 and a half hours and 9 hours and 41 minutes, respectively.

That implies the Galaxy S22 family won’t have to overcome a particularly high hurdle. The Ultra, like its predecessor, features a 5,000 mAh battery, while the Plus has a 4,500 mAh battery. The battery on the smaller Galaxy S22 is 3,700 mAh.

The two larger phones charge at 45W wired, while the regular S22 charges at a slower 25W. All three phones support up to 15W wireless charging. And we can expect no included chargers this year, just like with the S21 series.
